SBD 06626 served with VS 41 aboard USS Ranger during Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa in 1942. It was later transferred to VGS 29 aboard USS Santee in December 1942, where it operated on South Atlantic patrols from Brazil, carrying out anti submarine and anti blockade missions.
In June 1943, the aircraft moved to VB 28. By October 1943, it was assigned to a carrier qualification training unit at Glenview, Illinois, conducting deck landing practice on Lake Michigan. On 5 October 1943, it crashed into the lake during takeoff following an engine failure.
The aircraft remained on the lakebed until its recovery in 1996. In 2018, it was placed on long term loan to the Michigan Flight Museum by the National Naval Aviation Museum. |
