Pima Air & Space Museum Tucson, Arizona May 1981, October 1996 and March 2019

Opened in 1976 the private and non-profit Pima Air & Space Museum is very impressive, covering 80 acres it has over 250 aircraft on display, making it the 4th largest aviation museum in the United States. It is situated on the perimeter of Davis-Monthan AFB and the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG), the largest aircraft storage and preservation facility in the world. Many of the museum's exhibits ended their service with a period of storage at AMARG to be saved from scrapping by towing directly from the base across the road and into the museum. Four or five hangars house many of the most valued exhibits and enable very important restoration of aircraft to be done on site.

The first Guardians were delivered for testing in June 1950 before entering service on aircraft carriers in December of that year. Guardians served on Navy carriers until 1955 when the last of them were sent to reserve squadrons before their retirement from military service in 1957. Of the 389 Guardians built only five survived scrapping when purchased for conversion for firefighting. They flew with the Aero Union Corporation in California until 1973. It flew 32 combat missions from June to August of 1945. Damaged by flak during the last mission, which lead to a mid-air collision but was still able to safely land. Repaired it was put into the air one more time over Tokyo, flying over the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945 during the surrender ceremony. In 1969, it was donated to the Museum. The B-29 first flew in 1942 and carried more bombs higher, farther, and faster than any other bomber of World War II. Of the 3,970 B-29s built, around 26 complete B-29s survive today, 24 in the US.
